Your neighbours probably have ponds and you have some long grass or similar.
We get the neighbourhood frogs hunting in our garden for just this reason. We are intending to restore some "wildness" once we've removed all the pernicious weeds. Paul DS. |

We now have four ponds (one is much bigger) and we have a lot of frogs in the garden, but we still have plenty of slugs. I'm not sure how effective they are at slug control. Toads are more known for eating slugs than frogs are AFAIK. Its still nice to have them though. As someone else said, the pond alone won't do it, you need sheltering sites (log piles, long grass, wild corners, open access compost heaps) for them to stay in your garden. Anita |

A couple of years ago, I built a small stream (with pump and all) in my mums
garden, its mainly made of the local rock, which I used to collect in a rucksack when I went out running (i was fitter then!!) But the frogs love it, it only has a small 1 ft diameter sump/ pond at the bottom but we had 6 in there last year, they just sit around under the rocks, specifically the ones that have the water running over and under them. Although as you say, they dont eat all the slugs... My ol man (joking I think!!) said to tether a badger in the garden and that would keep out the slugs...... Hmmmmmm!!!!!! Add some bricks to allow small mammals, such as hedgehogs to escape when they fall in. This is also suitable for a dwarf 'pygmea' (?) lilly. and perhaps one or two other aquatic plants. We have a small grating over it to prevent people putting their fut in it and/or hedghogs falling in. The bars are big enough for the frogs though. There are other ponds in the area also. Do be sure to leave some undergrowth for them to forage through though. Some long grass (ornamental is OK) is ideal.. As onother poster mentioned one or 2 'dwarf' plants Typha minima etc.. will help. // Jim |

Most responses have been very positive about frog occupation. But, the presense of a pond does not guarantee that it will be adopted. Your posh new pristine pool may not have the same appeal as next door's well established muddy morass that they have been using for years. -- ned |

I don't think it is an effective method of slug control, we've always had loads of slugs as well. Us too. Until this year, I've seen no slugs at all in our garden and very little signs of their activity. Perhaps they're frightened of the hens ...
