Hi

I have a barrel pond about 3' deep by 3' diameter with one dwarf water
lily and a small water hawthorn plant in it. Unfortunately the water
seems to be going stagnant and after detecting a faint hydrogen sulphide
type aroma from it this morning I have removed several bucketfuls of
water from it and replaced it with tap water. I don't think this is a
good longterm solution as it changes the water chemistry but obviously I
don't want a stagnant pond! I can't put a fountain in it as the water
lily needs still water.

Does any kind soul out there have any floating oxygenators in their pond
which they are going to prune/cut back and if so maybe could they put
some in a plastic bag and send me some? I'd be happy to send a freezer
bag in an sae :) I've looked online but the postage charges are either
ridiculous for a small plant or you have to spend £10 plus. I don't
know of any shops locally which sell such things either. All I want is
a small amount of oxygenating plant to bung in which isn't too invasive
and will perhaps float lower down in the water so as not to swamp the
current occupants.

your water Hawthorne wont mind the moving water but your lily will. although
the Hawthorne will eventually grow a little large for your container.

It sounds like stagnation through lack of oxygen. I would use an air pump
rather than a fountain. ( see out web site for information on these)
www.arghamvillage.co.uk the lily will be fine with this as they do not
significantly move the water- just adds air bubbles.

alternatively lift the plants out every day or so and churn the water up to
keep it oxygenated, especially in hot weather.

I agree with you regarding the ridiculous postage and order size of most
nurseries. I am about to add the water plants to our website
www.arghamvillage.co.uk ( we have probably the best range of aquatics, and
marginal in East Yorkshire)
We wont bother with any of that silly minimum order or overcharging postage
( although I must say sending plants through the post is expensive)
If you would like to email me your address I would be delighted to send you
a 'sample' of elodea crispa.

There are some much more interesting deep water oxygenates which would work
well with your barrel.

Hi Lynda,

Sounds a bit mad, but go to your nearest pet shop that sells fish tank
supplies. You can buy little bundles of elodea whatsit complete with lead
weights for a small sum of money. (Haven't bought any for years so can't
help on price!). People put these in their fish tanks to help with the
oxgenating, and the fish seem to eat it as well! It can take over if it
likes conditions, but in you barrell it would be easy to control. Go for
several bundles, and don't expect immediate results.
