Hazelnut bushes

Over the fence at the bottom of my garden there is a red leaved hazel/cobnut
tree. When we moved in the garden was full of seedling nut trees, and
several larger bushes. (Together with ash trees and brambles!) I removed all
but two, which were growing at the bases of some climbing roses. If the nuts
were to go, the roses had to go too.
I don't know how old these nut bushes are, they are both green leaved,
probably planted by the squirrels and they were cut back hard when we were
seeing about the possibility of removing them. That was two years ago.
Does anyone know the liklihood of getting nuts from them, and if, how and
when they can be pruned to encourage fruiting. The shoots are very vigorous
and healthy looking, but comparing with the tree across the fence there will
be no nuts next year, because the mature one is already showing immature
catkins.

Thanks
Ann
