One source of interesting gardens is the National Garden Scheme who produce
every year a book showing all the gardens open under their scheme and the
days and times. It's known as the "Yellow Book" 'cause that's it's colour .
These are usually private gardens open for perhaps one or two days a year
for charity.
Take a look at www.ngs.org.uk/

Wakehurst Place is the other "Kew Gardens" and well worth a visit if you
like large landscapes, and near there is Heron's Bonsai if that interests
you, and/or McBeans Orchids which is a bit further South.

Get hold of a copy of the 2003 Yellow Book of (mostly private) gardens
which open for charity, often only for one or two days a year...there
are some real gems, and they often have plant stalls too. The book costs
about £5, you can buy it by post but as you're getting a bit close to
your departure date it might be better to get one when you
arrive..widely available at garden centres, bookshops etc.

Don't miss Beth Chatto's garden and nursery if you pass near Colchester.

Janet.

I recommend a visit to Merriments Gardens in Hurst Green, a real treat for
all plant lovers ;-)
