lawn care for rookie

just laid a small lawn (35 sq m) and would appreciate advice as to how to
keep it at its best ie feeding / what feeds / time of year jobs etc. Seem to
recall this may have been a FAQ topic on the site but can't find it now!!

Thanks in advance

There's a good little book on the subject - The New Lawn expert by Dr.
D. G. Hessayon. Costs about 6bp usually available in Garden Centres etc.
Cover al the things you mentioned and more.

Get yourself a copy of 'The Lawn Expert', one of D.G.Hessayon's series
of garden books. Try a s/h bookshop first.

All the stuff I've ever bought says feed once in the spring & once in the
autumn. Also, depending on how hard you want to work (!) its worth raking it
out at the same time &getting rid of the thatch/moss. Aeriating it is a good
idea once a year - best done with hollow tines rather than a fork which will
just compress the dirt around the holes you make. Cut it regularly but not
too short - especially when there is dry weather.

Lastly, depending on your soil you may want to dress it once a year (in the
spring I would think) with either some Potting compost or a mixture of this
and Sharpsand if you have lots of clay. Rake it out & then work it in with a
broom. This will also help to flatten the lawn over time as the extra
material fills in the low spots.
