Thanks for the replies. I will wait until it cools down a bit and if
the worms don't return I will have to clear the bin out and start
again!!

start a worm bin then you will always have loads of worms to add to your
compost bin ........be careful to cover the bin though cos right now all the
birds are so hungry with the hot weather they are probably eating every worm
that surfaces in your bin
