Blight (was tomatoes and BM)

Mention has been made of blight and weather conditions on toms/BM
thread.

AIUI it's _humidity_ and temperature raher than rain that brings
blight. Something called a 'Smith period' is declared when the temp.
and hum. are right for blight for a couple of days.

For those who want to know when best to apply BM then visit
www.potatocrop.com and see the blight watch section. you can register
to receive email and text message alerts for your area: it's designed
for commercial growers but doesn't throw a wobbly when you tell it
you're growing 0.001 acres of potatoes!

sorry to follow up to my own post, but I've just found this:

quote
Smith Period Definition

A full Smith Period has occurred when:
At least two consecutive days where min temperature is 10ºC or above
and on each day at least 11 hours when the relative humidity is
greater than 90%.

A Near Miss occurs when:
One or both of the above two consecutive days has only 10 hours when
the relative humidity is greater than 90%.
