Poisonous apples ??
 

Hi group,

I have this somewhat neurotic friend (who wishes to remain nameless!)

She has a bed in her lawn where she has grown Ricinus (False Castor
oil) plants for the last three years in a row. Now she has planted an
apple tree in the bed.

There are several fruits on her tree and she asked me whether the
apples would be safe to eat. She is afraid that the poison from the
Ricinus might somehow have transferred from the soil into her apples
!!

I'm pretty sure that the poison is in the seeds and not the whole
plant...

My reassurances did not seem to convince her, so I promised to 'ask
URG' ...........

Well you can tell her someone with a Horticultural bit of paper says its
quite harmless!-) FWIW! LOL

On two counts:
1) They could attract lightening.
2) Tips of umbrellas have been known to harbour traces of the poisonous
ricin. Though I understand you are safe unless you are a foreign diplomat.

If she lives with seven dwarfs and/or has an evil stepmother, precautions
should be taken.

If she IS an evil stepmother, I suggest that feeding the apples to her
stepdaughter should be avoided. It may seem like a good idea in the short
term, but the longterm outlook isn't good.

Otherwise, she should get started making apple pies. ;-)

Heavens, I'm glad I'm not you!

I have a complete glut of apples this year: the pruning and compost is
finally paying off (and this is a good year anyway...)

Just had a party this weekend, and rather than crisps, served a trug-load
of apples and loads of mini-pies: that's got to be better than
Pringles...!
