Old cordylines only fade away

We all know that it is pratcially impossible to murer a cordyline australis
but I did think I had managed to.

Last summer, one growing in a brick-built patio tub was getting out of hand
and it was quite impossible to dig it out, so I removed all the top gowth
and dug down about three inches below soil level to get rid of every trace
of root that I could, although there still vast amounts of it left. I then
proceeded to hack them about as much as I could. (The root is extremely hard
and difficult to remove when it fills a confined space). Obviously this
treatment would kill anything normal.

I then recovered it with soil and placed a couple of pot plants on top of
it.

Youv'e guessed it . . . I now have two lovely new plants growing from the
roots, each about six inches high!
