Gravity is another popular newsreader... not sure if it's still
Freeware, but you might find earlier versions that are.

Try here for an excellent selection of quality Freeware

Agent is good - I used it for years and never thought I'd change but I
have. I found Dialog :-

Dialog is what Agent *should* have been by now and it seems to be being
used by more and more (ex) Agent users.

suivants:

Glad to hear OE is (or was) being axed. At least now there will be room for
some decent software.
Can anybody recommend a good News Reader for XP? BTW, Outlook XP uses OE to
read news, so how does MS intend to provide a substitute?

Here's a list of alternatives posted to another group

Copy

http://www.40tude.com/dialog/contact.htm

MesNews
Le "petit dernier"
En français
Assez complet et très rapide.
En constante évolution.
http://www.zoo-logique.org/mesnews/
News:news.zoo-logique.org

XanaNews
Souple et configurable à volonté.
Anglais.
http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d6xananews.htm

Gravity 2.5 ou 2.6
Très puissant - il existe une version française.
http://gravity.tbates.org/
http://www.gattaca.org/gravity/

http://www.forteinc.com/agent/download.php

Xnews
http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Pan
Un des meilleurs newsreaders tournant sous linux.
Mais peut tourner aussi sous Windows. Hélas, interface graphique (à
charger
séparément) très lente.
http://pan.rebelbase.com/

GrabIt
Spécialisé dans le téléchargement de fichiers image
http://www.shemes.com/

news
pour Mozilla/Firebird.

One of the best off-line newsreaders around is MacSOUP, which has the
added plus of not being produced by Micro$oft.

I use Google Groups, but only because I've never got round to the
fiddle of installing Free Agent or "the German server" (which I
believe is going to go members-only soon).

I couldn't recommend it except for its full(?) Usenet archive. It
takes up to twelve hours to display a posting; it regularly hiccups
with "Message not found" when you try to get a reply form up; it often
reports falsely that you've got the wrong subject line when you try to
send a reply; it isn't configurable; it's web-based, not client-based,
so very expensive to run unless you're on an always-on connection or a
monthly fee, and you can't work off-line; and as a clincher, it
sometimes seems to split threads in busier newsgroups, so the same
subject line appears twice or more, and you have to read both.

It's ok if you only use one or two less busy groups like this one (the
poor things out there don't know what they're missing!); but not if
you want a number of groups or one or two very busy ones.

Mike.

Or look at Zetnet's own software (ZIMACS) on www.zetnet.com

Offline news/mailreader, you download and upload compressed packets and
any attachments are separated from the mail and placed in a received
files folder, so you can open and read any mail with confidence, even if
it does have a virus with it.

The only way to activate a received virus is to decode it, then run it.

Guess who hasn't ever contracted a virus, and has only had an AV program
for a one month trial during seven years on the net?

.... or something similar which is still alive :-)

If you just want to use it for news (and optionally mail), take a look
at Mozilla Thunderbird (Mozilla without the web browser component). If
you feel like taking control of your browser too, you could install the
whole Mozilla complete. Go here for details/choices:
