bulb question from newbie gardner

Hi All

When do you plant the bulbs - as they are all sold in the garden centres.
But I thought, if they are planted now, will they not get frozen to death in
the winter. Sorry but I read the books from the library - they tell how to
plant them, but not when.

cheers

Dan

Most bulbs should be planted to overwinter in the ground. The more
tender ones (like freesias) should be left till spring in colder areas.

Plant your narcissi, hyacinths, muscari as soon as possible.
Plant tulips from November.
Galanthus (snowdrops) and Eranthis (winter aconites) are reluctant to grow
from dry bulbs, so they are best planted 'in the green' (post-flowering,
leaves green) in early spring, to flower the following year.
Sorry, haven't tried freesias on my London clay, so can't advise.
