Apple pips and honesty
Hi, I just wanted to ask if the best way to get apple pips to germinate is to
bung them in a pot with some soil and leave them out over winter? Also, is that the best way with honesty seeds too? Thanks **************************** Rhiannon http://www.livejournal.com/users/rhiannon_s/ Q: how many witches does it take to change a lightbulb? A: depends on what you want it changed into! |

Put apple seeds in some moist soil in a plastic bag. Then set them in the
bottom drawer of your refrigerator. Check them in 30 days, and if you don't see anything, put them back for another month. After the second month you will normally see them sprouting. When you do, take them out and plant them in a pot with the white sprout down. Keep them moist and in some sunshine, even if on a window sill. Cant help you with the honesty. Apple pips and honesty
Honesty in my garden self-seeds so readily that I'm sure you can sow the
seed immediately with a light covering of soil. Mine pop up without any special cultivation, but you will undoubtedly get stronger plants if you prepare the soil. You could also sow them in spring, but will have to wait for flowers in the following spring. You won't need to pamper them, but they do suffer with mildew if they get too dry. Hope this helps. From: "Niall Smyth" Date: 30/09/2003 11:59 GMT Daylight Time Message-id: Hi all On the honesty issue Is it bought as a seed? No, a friend of mine has just moved house and had a load growing in her new garden, I got some seeds off of her. Is it for planting now? I'd quite like to get it in for next year, so I guess you plant them now. Any more info/tips? Please, they'll have to grow in pots as I'm garden deficient right now and reduced to a balcony. As for the apple seeds, they came out an apple I was eating last week and have been sitting on my window sill ever since. It was a russet I think. **************************** Rhiannon http://www.livejournal.com/users/rhiannon_s/ Q: how many witches does it take to change a lightbulb? Apple pips and honesty
Subject: Apple pips and honesty
From: R. McGeddon Date: 30/09/2003 16:17 GMT Daylight Time Message-id: I planted half a dozen apple pips im seed compost a couple of months ago and two germinated. Whether they will develop true (Many apples require a fertilising tree of another variety) to the apple they came from is another matter. The honesty is for a friend who always wanted some, but could never get seeds, so I hope it grows for her. The apple pips, well they don't have to grow into the same sort of tree. It's just one of those "Things to do before you die" list sort of thingie if you get what I mean. I always wanted to grow an apple tree. No real reason, I just want to. **************************** Rhiannon http://www.livejournal.com/users/rhiannon_s/ Q: how many witches does it take to change a lightbulb? I've grown it on in pots outside and it's now 8ft tallish - still never flowered or fruited (obviously) :-) Still it may yet.....! Chris S |
