Hi, I just wanted to ask if the best way to get apple pips to germinate is to
bung them in a pot with some soil and leave them out over winter?

Also, is that the best way with honesty seeds too?

Put apple seeds in some moist soil in a plastic bag. Then set them in the
bottom drawer of your refrigerator. Check them in 30 days, and if you don't
see anything, put them back for another month. After the second month you
will normally see them sprouting. When you do, take them out and plant them
in a pot with the white sprout down. Keep them moist and in some sunshine,
even if on a window sill.

Cant help you with the honesty.

Honesty in my garden self-seeds so readily that I'm sure you can sow the
seed immediately with a light covering of soil. Mine pop up without any
special cultivation, but you will undoubtedly get stronger plants if you
prepare the soil.
You could also sow them in spring, but will have to wait for flowers in the
following spring.
You won't need to pamper them, but they do suffer with mildew if they get
too dry.

Please, they'll have to grow in pots as I'm garden deficient right now and
reduced to a balcony.

As for the apple seeds, they came out an apple I was eating last week and have
been sitting on my window sill ever since. It was a russet I think.

Just try to stop honesty seeds germinating wherever you put them.

I planted half a dozen apple pips im seed compost a couple of months ago
and two germinated.

Whether they will develop true (Many apples require a fertilising tree
of another variety) to the apple they came from is another matter.

It doesn't matter, as I shall bud onto a family tree and if the fruit
doesn't turn out to be worthwhile, I'll bud something else on the spur.

They are biennial, so you'll get the flowers and (drumskin) seedcases in
2005 - unless they really get established and we have a long Indian
summer.

They should be quite happy. I'd plant some lobelias and white alyssum
with them in the spring to get some sort of a show for next year.

May not grow into a tree which bears even similar fruit. If you want a
russet tree, I'd buy one ready-made.
