What we do is dig out the clay completely so that we have pockets. We then fill these pockets with a mix of seivedsoil/pottingcompost/grit/san d/ericaceouscompost in varying proportions depending upon which plant we are going to plant in a particular pocket. Initially we tried mixing sand and compost with the clay but it never made a free draining enough mix for most of the alpine type plants that 'go' in a rockery -- Jane Ransom in Lancaster. I won't respond to private emails that are on topic for urg but if you need to email me for any other reason, put ransoms at jandg dot demon dot co dot uk where you see |

If you use a sharp sand and compost mix it will drain quite well and suit a whole range of rockery plants. I prepared just such a rockery for the missus - she had never touched the soil before, but after just a year she has made it look stunning with a variety of plants "knitted" together and flowering through the seasons. |
