Wisteria /Viginia Creeper.
 

I have just cleared an area in front of a 6 foot high by 24 feet long
fence . I am considering purchasing either Wisteria or Virginia
Creepers to grow up the fence.I know the merits of both ie, leaves ,
flowers. My side of the fence is in the shade. Any views which to
purchase ? Also when should I purchase and plant.?

It makes little difference. Both prefer sun but can handle open
shade - and do reasonably well in it. You can plant container
grown plants any time the soil is not frozen.

You could even grow both but pruning might be tricky :-)

I would go for 2 but go for Parthenocissus henryana instead of Virginia
creeper.. Much nicer on a shaded wall.

Purchase and plant now till about late feb/march. at least while both
of these are dormant. Plant when ground is not frosty and firm in .
mulch well to protect roots from frost

P. henryana gets my vote, it colours up well in shade (the leaves have good
colour and markings in summer as well as the wonderfull autumn display.)

purchased two P henryana. Will plant out and look forward to a good

Possibly, it does take a while to get established.

Mind you I find the plain summer colour of P. henryana almost as
attractive as its autumn tints.. Those deep dark green leaves with the
ivory white veins which almost seem to glow at you in the right light..

It is incredible..

The parent of our P.henryana is showing good colour this year, but its
in a more exposed condition than ours and a mature plant. Ours is
growing well but not much sign of autumn tints.. Mebbe if we get a hard
frost;-)

I've got both growing on my fence and they look great together.
Wisteria flowers earlier in the year with the V. Creeper giving a
spectacular autumn colour (vibrant red leaves).
