Off topic, I know, but I'd be interested he know if others - apart from
myself - are being driven scatty by the relentless barrages of noise from
fireworks over the past weeks. I've no objection to people having fun but
lately - in this part of South London - the noise never seems to stop. And
occasionally it carries on to the small hours. People can be so thoughtless!

I've found spent fireworks in my garden and I daren't go out there after
dark in case I'm hit. I know neighbours are terrified and animals are
frightened but nobody seems capable of doing anything about this.

I'd appreciate some feedback before I complain to my local councillor - not
that I expect that to do much good.

Well, sorry to say this ( and knowing it will get flamed) I am quite the
opposite. I get fed up of this kind of moan and gripe.

I bet you are the one with the barbie every fine weekend in the summer ,
polluting the wonderful summer nights arent you? But Bonfire night, cos you
dont bother, no one else can is that it?

I am one of those you are moaning about.
I had a bonfire party on Wednesday night who was letting off large numbers
of fireworks.. Its only time I ever have a party. I love bonfire night. ( I
dont bother with Christmas or any other comercialised festival)

As for my animals , they were fine. I have yet to have a "terrified animal"
on Bonfire night or the nights that suround it! Are you sure your not
reading your feelings into their behaviour?

In my area firework parties seemed to occur on certain nights . Most seemed
to go off on Wednesday although I have to say all the offical displays were
being puched through on halloween or the weekend thereafter, and another
speight of these "offical and large" displays went off this weekend!

So if anyone is to blame for the enlongating of the celebration , its the
companies and shops and councils themselves, not people like me.

There will always be abuse by some people , especially apprentice urban
terrorist types in inner cities and banning fireworks simply stops me having
a good time on a night I especially enjoy.

rant over.

I'm in SW London and am just as fed up. I can hear them now as I'm typing
this. We've had them every day and night for weeks - long before Diwali and
even longer before Guy Fawkes night. They seem to get worse each year now.
One night they were still going at 02.00 and again at 06.00.

I like a good display of fireworks but only occasionally.

Yes we too are fed up with it, Devali, Bonfire night and the nearest
Saturdays to them and before 10pm is OK in my book but every night (and some
days?) for a couple of months is crazy.
Why would you light fireworks after 10pm when you can't sound your car horn,
a safety device.
We had what sounded like a large display near here start at 11.30 the other
night and we were woken up at 2.30 one night last week when some nice local
lit a cake (large multi-chamber firework), and that's not the only time this
year.
Even our cats who originally didn't mind fireworks at all are now
frightened, and a relatives dog has to be sedated almost every night which
can't be good for him. Goodness knows how the wildlife cope.

I suspect these unthinking morons will ruin it for all of us as usual.

Following on, I have to produce my Shotgun cert when buying cartridges.

Fireworks are normally purchased by inexperienced persons or lets say
persons not normally used to handling such volatile objects.

They are or can be as lethal as a Shotgun cartridge so why no laws for
buying them.

Sign of the times Molly, Sod you (not you) I'm alright is the attitude
today (not mine) ............

I live in a very remote part of the Lincs Fenland, and have had this
now for about 1 month. People literally have money to burn.

Again, have fun and enjoy yourself, if burning money is your thing,
but it WAS to celebrate Nov 5th, Guy Fawkes etc, and not spread over a
month.

Still Christmas starts in September, and Easter eggs will soon, if not
already, be in the shops. Sad!

Still sod you, I'm alright, I don't care ....................

I suggest you read the following taken from the Guide dogs for the blind
Association's Website :-

"Guide Dogs has campaigned for a number of years for fireworks controls.
The charity is forced to prematurely retire a number of guide dogs each
year as a result of trauma caused by fireworks noise, as well as retraining
many others and sedating hundreds more. As fireworks use has grown in
recent years, so have the negative effects and Guide Dogs is faced with an
annual bill of hundreds of thousands of pounds. In addition, guide dog
owners are often left without the independence and mobility they have come
to rely on from their guide dogs."

Do you *still* feel the same ?

To be bloody minded - YES!
I have to be honest and say I get fed up with the the quotation of such
organisations ad infanitum.
Maybe they simply wont admit they have a breeding problem? Or that they dont
train the owners well enough?

I have lived with animals all my life, bred them, kept livestock, have lots
of pets. I love them all.

Some are anxious by nature. The answer is a secure home and shelter and to
ensure they are indoors.

You are sadly wrong. One of our dogs had to be regularly sedated as
she became a trembling jelly each time she heard fireworks.

A very close friend in a village in Wiltshire lost his dog ten days
ago because she ran away having been terrified and disorientated by
fireworks. After ten days of searching, posters, visiting every
possible place and telling everyone, he broadcast on the local radio
station. Sandy was found thank goodness. My brother is very
seriously ill in hospital at the moment and they put a photograph of
Sandy with the words 'found' by his bed. When he came round after
being unconscious for over ten days, he cried with joy. Do not
attribute your ridiculous 'human' feelings to animals. They just
hear loud bangs and are terrified.

Where do you live Mich, some sleepy village in the middle of nowhere? Lucky
you if you only have them "around" Nov 5th. If it was the same for all of us
then we'd probably agree with you. However, most of us have to listen to
them for the entire month - night after night and it's just spoilt the whole
thing. People seem to have no worries about setting them off at any hour.
Now we are getting people throwing them at houses, cars, putting them in
post boxes, telephone boxes and god knows where else. They are dangerous in
the wrong hands and "wrong hands" seem to increase year by year together
with the lack of consideration for others with regards to noise.

Your point concerning animals - my dog used to ignore them, never bothered
her, then last year when it seemed to be constant, night after night, she
suddenly "flipped" and decided she was frightened. It was obviously due to
overload.

As I said before, if you are only having them on Nov 5th, no wonder you
still enjoy them!

Molly

I don't have a problem with people letting them off on the 5th or even
during the closest weekend and I'm not going to complain with people
entering into the spirit of the occasion any more than I'd complain about
trick-or-treaters at halloween but I really don't see the attraction of
domestic displays. I spent £6.50 last night taking my daughter and neice to
the local Round-Table display. The fireworks were amazing and helped charity
at the same time. There was a massive bonfire, fairground rides, and food
stalls as well. Why on earth would anyone bother on spending hundreds of
pounds to have something far inferior at home?

I do think it's inconsiderate though to let them off on other nights. It's
all very well telling people to keep their pets indoors but it's not fair to
ask them to do that for a fortnight either side of bonfire night.

I used to feel a bit like you - but not the animal bit. It used to be
alright round here when, as you say, "firework parties seemed to occur on
certain nights". Years ago it used to be just Nov 5 and/or the weekend
before or after but not any more. It might die down soon - I hope so - but
you can bet your life it will start up again at Christmas and the New Year -
any excuse. And, no, I don't have BBQs in the summer.

I am certain some animals are frightened by them just as some humans are
frightened by certain things and others are not. You cannot generalise, and
how about the wildlife - or don't you care?
