Is it advisable to protect the new blooms, which are now coming up,
from frost using, say a leafy mulch?

We live in North london.

Yes,

the flowers are hardy but the flowerbuds not, so it is advisable to cut back
the leaves in februari and place some airy dry mulching around the old
leaves.

Here in Holland the flowering of Helleborers is depending on the kind of
winter. Some winters are to cold and there are just a few late flowers left.

When we drove up to Enkhuizen two days ago, the willows were in leaf
between Hoorn and Enkhuizen. Funny old world!

Rene,

Sorry, I don't agree with you. We had temperatures of minus 12 last
winter and our hellebores were marvellous. No damage at all and
superb flowering. I did nothing to protect the buds. I think that
is part of the joy of them.
