WTHDEHTHSMI?

Exactly!

Why The Heck Do We Have To Have So Many Initials?

I am afraid I only speak English, I don't speak abbreviations or Mobile
speak or what ever is giving rise to this ever increasing glut of
initials/abbreviations or what ever you want to call them

Abbreviation-to-initials was being used in usenet long before phone
text messaging increased the use of word contractions. Initials,
abbreviations, and word contractions were all used long before usenet
was invented, in much older signal systems such as telegraphy,
semaphore, morse code and road signs.

*Many* intials have been used in many contexts way before mobile
phones or the internet. SOS is fairly recognizable. I think we all
mail letters at the PO. You read about the activities of the WI. We
say everything is OK. (R)SPCA has been in common use for quite some
time. I live in the USA, perhaps you in the UK.

The web and communication through typing has, indeed, resulted in a
proliferation of initial shorthand. Many acronyms have become rather
common for phrases used often. Like anything else, it can become mis-
or overused. As long as we all agree on the meanings (or ask for
explanation), it seems harmless enough. AFAIK.
