Buhtan Pine

HI all, I was looking for a conifer for a friends garden and I saw one of these
Buhtan pines. Before I actually buy it I thought I'd better find out if it'll
survive in her new garden, she's just moved down to the coast so any plant has
to be able to take freezing westerlys and very salty air.

So I was wondering if anyone on here knows whether a Buhtan pine would survive?
I'm assuming from the name it can take the cold and the winds, but does anyone
know about the salt?

Thanks in advance

They are very tough but I can't say about the salt resistance. Is she
planning on planting a full size one? If so she should remember that they
can readily grow to 90 feet in forty years.

It's just a titchy one out of a garden centre, I didn't realise they could grow
that high though. Still there should be enough room out the back for it.
Thanks.

I am assuming we are talking about the species rather than a dwarf cultivar?
Nevertheless garden centres are notorious for selling plants that soon
outgrow their welcome. I had a pinus wallchiana (BP) growing in a large pot
in an attempt to limit the size. Sadly it was stolen when it had reached
over a metre in 18 months.

I think I'll check that, I don't recall anything on the Label except the name.
And not even in latin either. Thanks

If you have the room for it then it makes a wonderful tree. I had a look at
the World Checklist of Conifers and although there are some cultivars they
are only available from very specialised nurseries so I expect you have the
species.
