I've googled this NG for old posts on this subject and although I see a
*LOT* of discussion, I see no meat.

Just how *DO* you "control" them.

I wanna kill 'em! - legally.

I believe it is currently legal to kill a grey squirrel. If you can't
do that, you can catch them in one of those rat-sized humane traps and
take them to your local council's pest control department and they will
do it. They told me their advised method was crushing the skull with
some implement. That sounds a bit hit & miss for a squirrel and could
cause suffering if you don't get it right first time, so next quickest
and not particularly painful we hear from people who it's nearly
happened to would be submerging the trap with its contents in normal
water. I wouldn't advise poison because that could produce a painful
death, and of course their poisoned bodies could be fed on by animals
you didn't wish to harm.

Shoot em with a gun!

Get a cheap 22 air rifle for about £40 and away you go...legal as you like
as long as you follow the rules pertaining to air guns.

My bosses father shot at one from his bedroom window as it sat in a tree on
his property. A few hours later he was looking out of the same window a he
saw the squirrel again, so he took aim and shot at it and was very pleased
to see it fall from the branch.

Later that day, a knock at the door...

Evening all...do you own an air rifle sir?

Yes officer

Did you shoot a squirrel earlier today?

Yes officer, and I saw it fall from the tree dead!

I see sir, well it fell from the tree as you say and landed at the feet of
an RSPCA officer that had been called by a member of the public to aid a
squirrel that seemed to be injured and was stuck up a tree!

I see officer

May I see the gun sir

Yes officer

All seems in order sir.....good evening

And I am not keen on the descriptions I have read of the recommended way
of killing. It looks like not only could it be difficult to acheive
painlessly in the hands of an inexperienced or nervous person, but
surely if you're not quick enough the squirrel could either chew his way
out of the sack or turn and nip your fingers while you're trying to hold
it closed.

What would be better is a storage case that doubles as a chloroform
chamber, with a system of chlorform or nitrous oxide in vials that only
get broken when you close a hatch, so they're fairly safe to use. You
put the cage containing the squirrel into the case, close it and the gas
gently puts the squirrel to sleep. Then when he's asleep, you fill the
whole assembly with water, releasing an opening at arms length so you
don't get gassed; after half an hour you have a definitely dead
squirrel.

Arsehole. Himmler would have been proud of you.

To avoid grizzlies, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game advises hikers
to wear noisy little bells on clothes and carry pepper spray. Also watch
for signs of activity: Black bear scat is smaller and contains berries;
grizzly scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

Use a Hav-a-Heart trap which is a live trap and then put a .177 pellet into
the little devil's head. It might take a couple more to finish the little
fuzzy-tailed rat. Bury them around the roses or plant an iris over the
little treerat.

Again, I can't imagine that this would be practical for everyone. And
why have to take a chance it might need 3 shots, with the first two
painful, when someone could come up with a painless "sleepy" method? I
read that you can take the trap to a vet for humane destruction, but
then the animal is upset for longer on the journey and everything.

Do NOT, whatever you do try to catch a squirrel in a sack, unless
you want your hand scarred very badly.

What would be better is a storage case that doubles as a chloroform

A simpler way is to catch the thing in a trap obtainable from Mole Valley
Farmers based in Somerset, then immerse the trap containing the
squirrel in a tank full of water, the death will occur within 8 seconds,
I've timed it, frequently!
