Tree Identification Request
 
Hi

Can you identify this tree, which is in my front garden?

This is the overall tree:

and this is a close up of the developing flowers/leaves:

I couldn't work it out form my tree book. I know the big tree overshadowing
it to the right is a type of cypress, but this one is a mystery.

Yes, I'd agree with that. The leaves are most definitely like apple
leaves, the flowers look like apple flowers, and I think I've seen some
species which are as deep a red as that.
