Identifying a pest - help needed
 

Does anyone know what the small red beetle thing is that seems to be
all over our garden this year? It's slightly smaller than a ladybird,
moves quickly and is totally red - and there are a lot of them this
year, haven't noticed them ever before.

Do you have lilies or fritarillary?

If so, it's possibly a lily beetle, because, apart from the quick
movement (which they are not known for except when dropping of a
plant) your description is spot on.

They are the Insects of Satan.

Yes my immediate thought was lily beetle, my second thought was ,'how far
are you from Plymouth?!' lol

If it moves quickly it is probably a predator and a friend.

May I disagree Glenys ?
Glenda says they are smaller than a ladybird and all over the garden.
Lily beetles are bigger than ladybirds are usually only to be found on lilies

Have you got a dry sunny garden?
Do they look a bit like a small bright red spider? If so I've forgotten
their name but they are harmless.

Mine dew, there are some fairly big ladybirds about. Last year I found
an Anatis ocellata (8-9mm) waving at me from my Black Hamburg, so I
rushed inside for my beetlebook, and was disappointed to find that they
are 'fairly common' in the UK.

It flew away home, but where it came from God knows - there aren't any
fir trees nearby that I know of.

The book doesn't list Lily Beetle under 'Common Names', and as all names
are in Latin with only the commonest (like cockchafer, stag beetle, dor
beetle) English names (it misses black beetle, death watch beetle, storm
beetle, etc) - Dammit! I'm getting engrossed in the book now! - I have
no idea what the lily beetle looks like.

The book, BTW, is an English edition of a Danish one, which may explain
but not excuse the paucity of English names.

The ones I have been seeing this year are reaching 7 - 8 mm easy.

Ah, that's not the one that's all over the garden. The ones we have
are transparent red rather than solid red (if that makes sense) and
have no black bits on them. Any ideas?
