Hi all

I have recently had my back garden returfed, but unfortunatley it was by a
cowboy who I can not track back down.

The grass is good but unfortunatly he didn't seem to put the effort in
spreading the top soil very flat and it know resembles a rollercoaster. I
have managed to sort alot of it out with out relaying it myself by soaking
it and then rolling it which has made it look a lot better.

There are still a couple of dips that I would like to fix, is it possible to
do this with out lifting it and putting more top soil under neath it? I was
wandering if it is possible to just fill the dip with fresh top soil and let
the grass grow throug it or is it possible to put some top soil down and
then lay some fresh grass over that? I am looking at sods and not seeds.

Hi Simon. Its not a problem if the turf is still loose just roll it back
level out the soil adding extra if need be then relay the turf.
If it is already rooted then cut the turf around the problem area with a
spade, lift the turf by pushing the spade underneath, level the soil and
replace the turf, Good as new.

Often in the past when we have had a dip, we have dug up some sods from
somewhere else and filled the dip with them. We just put the new turves
in the dip, make them nice and soggy with water then trample them until
they become level. Amazing how quickly the dips fill in this way.
You can also fill the dips by repeatedly filling them with shallow
layers of a mixture of sharp sand and soil ie as soon as you see the
grass growing through the first layer, add another layer, but this takes
longer, obviously.

It should work if yo do it in stages, allowing the grass to grow
properly through the new soil before putting another layer down.
