Ant "Hills" In Grass
 

Hello,

I've been getting anthills appearing in my front lawn which don't appear in
the grass at the back of the house.

These anthills when disturbed release several hundred orange ants which I
"treat" with ant powder.The trouble is, next day more anthills appear in
other parts of the lawn.

This lawn is in fair to poor condition and has been in situ for
approximately 30 years. I cut it regularly as it has always looked best when
kept short, don't use weed killer or feed and this is the first year of
problems.

Last month I placed a couple of black cat silhouettes on the surrounding
border to discourage birds disturbing plants and having dust baths, which in
the past has messed the grass up. These silhouettes have proved very
effective, and I don't get many birds now pecking at the grass or in the
borders.

I haven't had these anthills in previous years and wondered if its possible
to spray something directly on the grass to limit the number of anthills.

Any advice please ?

I'm having exactly the same problem. The trick is to get right into the nest
with ant powder. If you fail to dust even a small number of the little
blighters they just build another nest(s) elsewhere and start again. If you
have a good look around your garden you will find that there is probably
other nests under paving stones or in gaps in brickwork or similar. I've
just been to Wilkinson's (because they're cheap) and stocked up on Nippon
Powder (for the garden) and Dethlac (for indoors). Wilkinson's also have
their own ant powder which is much cheaper but I have found it not to be as
effective as Nippon.

I blitzed them today. Tomorrow I will blitz any I missed. Eventually I will
eradicate them. Then it's just a case of waiting for the scouting party from
next doors garden!
