Default Ping Janet Baraclough: mulching lawn to make beds

Janet,

You mentioned in a thread on using grass cuttings that you create your
flower beds simply by putting mulch directly onto grass lawn, rather
than going to all the trouble of digging it up. I'm trying the same.

When the grass is all dead, and the flower bed is established and
working as it should, presumably it is several inches higher than the
grass it was created from (ATM my mulch is about 4 inches higher than
the adjacent lawn, but I only put it down last week). The lawns I'm
familiar with are either higher than the adjacent beds or have a micro
ha-ha around their edge which is laboriously maintained using a
half-moon lawn-edger. What do you do around the edges to stop the
mulch etc. migrating onto the grass?
