Good book for...

... identifying plants - does anyone know of one?

The kind of thing I have in mind is one that has *lots* of photos, of
leaves, flowers (if applicable) and fruit (if applicable) and maybe an
approach like identifying a plant by it's flower, starting with the colour
perhaps.

One for trees would be good too.

Thanks
Bigus

RHS Encyclopaedia of Plants & Flowers - expensive to buy so best got as
part of an introductory package with a book club. It has exactly what
you want.

On the back cover of May 2004 BBC Gardeners World there is a book club
offering 6 RHS books including RHS Encyclopaedia of Plants & Flowers
for about UKP30 including p&p as an introductory offer.

Yes and they expect you to enter a contract to buy more books, I buy all my
books from charity and secondhand book shops, cheaper than buying magazines
:)

Do you want to identify garden plants or wild plants? It makes a

I doubt it does to the plant ;-) Mainly garden plants but it would be nice
to have a comprehensive book - the RHS one that the other guys mention
sounds good.

Thanks

They pester you for ages once they've got your address though - Amazon are
doing it for £21, which is alright (compared to the £50+ computers books
often go for, even £30 doesn't seem too bad!). Spend over £25 and you get
free P&P, so all I need now is the title of a good book covering trees - any
suggestions?

Thanks
Bigus

The RHS won't do for UK wild plants, but unless you're particularly
interested in that, then the RHS will do you fine.

It also has quite a few trees in, so, again, no need for a separate
book. Wait till you've got the RHS book and used it awhile, and then see
where you feel your gaps are.

Another book (or books, actually) are the "Perrenials", "Roses",
"Shrubs", "Bulbs", "Annuals", "Vegetables" etc. books by Roger Phillips
and Matryn Rix. I have the bulbs book and the two volume perrenials
books (ealry and late flowering), but there is now a combined version.
The photographs are excellent in all of these books.

Thes.

The only problem with the RHS Encyclopedia is its sheer weight. It
just cannot be read in bed.

Not so! You lay it on the floor, then lie on your tummy with your head
overhanging the book. Where there's a will there's a way!
