Help: Bamboo advice

We have a large clump of bamboo - very tall and not a fancy variety. When
we moved in, we could see it had a concrete surround beneath the soil which
was restricting the roots. However, it has now gone rampant and
clumps/shoots, are popping up in various places well outside of this,
including the lawn. What can we do to regain control ? Any advice on weed
killer or natural remedy. Any advice on uses of the bamboo, apart from
runner bean poles. It would be sad not to make some use of this
overabundant resource. Are there any country crafts people who can offer
suggestions ? I assume it has to be thoroughly dried out before use ?
Apart from putting a bomb under it, I don't know what to do.
Please, please advise.

Stir fry the shoots? Much more environmentally friendly to eat it than to
poison it! ;o)

Its normally fairly easy to trace the runners and chop them off with loppers

i would guess they are running above the level of the concrete surround
probably because the bamboo has become so tight a clump it cant cope with
the restriction

Can you not trace back the runners ......cut them off

Split the clump and replant in the concrete ring thus giving it space to
grow again

I am sure any horticultural society will be happy to take all the bamboo
canes you can give them for their members

Sigh ! I wish it were that easy. The runners come from under the concrete
ring. The clumps are like concrete and impossible to dig out. Need a
builder with a digger. Too onerous a task to dig out and allow room for
more root room. I just want to control the clumps and kill them dead.

Thanks for the thought.

It sounds like you have a running form of bamboo. Poison and dig out, poison and dig out… until you have got rid of the lot. If you don’t want to dig it yourself, you’ll have to pay someone to do it.

We are seeing this problem with bamboo more and more it’s just bad planting practise people don’t research into the plants they buy, presumably impulse purchasing and then they wonder why they have problems.
