hi all

new to this NG.

This is a text only newsgroup.
If you want to post pictures, put them in a binary group and give us a
link to it.
Did you know that the most favoured way of distributing viruses is to
enmed them in attachments to notes?

That's very sensible advice as many ISPs cancel posts with pictures to
non-binary groups - I and many others on this ng will not have seen your
post.

dear franz martin and kay

thanks for your welcome to this ng - my photos have been scanned with
zonelabs security suite before posting so you needn't worry. sorry to offend
but there's no set of rules to read when you subscribe to this newsgroup so
i don't know how i was meant to know. btw, what exactly does enmed mean?
thanks for all your horticultural advice.

franz and kay - as you are so up on internet security, what are you doing
supplying your real email address to a newsgroup. don't you realise it's the
easiest way to get yourself spammed - wise up oh wise ones.

Most newsgroups have one. A link to it is posted frequently to the
group.

Its not specific to this group, its a general usenet thing .....no binaries
(pictures to you) posted to groups that dont have 'bin' in the name, as in
alt.bin.something-or-other. And the fact that your photos were scanned by a
virus checker is irrelevant, why would you trust anyone's binary attachments
when most people posting binaries are usually posting viruses?

There is a weekly post specifically regarding this group entitled
something like 'abc for newcomers' which, if you have heeded the general
advice to newbies to lurk for a while before posting, you will no doubt
have seen; and the restriction on posting pictures applies to *all* ngs
except for those specifically labelled as accepting binaries.

there are many sites dealing with 'netiquette ' - how to post politely
on the internet - try for example

http://www.people.man.ac.uk/~zlsiira/Netiquette/

which has a section specifically on newsgroups. I would suggest you read
this before posting to other ngs - I can think of several where your
manner of posting would be treated with much less tolerance than it has
been here.

I'm afraid, as I said in my post, that I was totally unable to give you
horticultural advice since my ISP, in common with many others, simply
does not pass on emails with pictures attached to non-binary groups -
even I cannot identify plants by telepathy. I was pointing out to you
that by posting as you had, you were making it difficult for people to
help you. My post was perfectly polite - the tone of your reply was not.

It is also a way to ensure that those who wish to contact me off the ng
can do so easily. My anti-spam arrangements ensure that spam does not
reach my PC.

Incidentally, I wonder why you think I am "so up on internet security".
I said not a single word about internet security in my reply to you - or
perhaps you didn't actually read what I said. You might consider whether
responding with snide comments to those who seek to help you is the most
effective way to obtain the advice you wish for.

I think you have still not got the whole point: Since this is a
text-only newsgroup, many, if not most of the servers will simply
strip a graphics attachment, so that not all the reades will even get
it.

It is not my real internet address. It requires someone with more
intellect than the address harvesting machines to send me a private
email. I have no objections to any members of urg decipering my
address from the published one if he/she wishes to contact me
privately.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that my ISP provides me with an excellent
spam trap, all included in the service.

If you had lurked a little before placing your query, you would have
noticed a thread which is renewed regularly which provides a good
introduction to new urglers. It is titled "abs for newcomers...."
submitted by "sysop". The latest issue is dated 07/08/04.

You will in due course learn that I am the best typomaker in the
