Pruning British Holm Oak

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know the correct time of year to prune or lop a Holm Oak?

My neighbour and friend has just had her beautiful tree massacred by a
cowboy tree surgeon. Several limbs were severely truncated and left to
bleed sap. My poor friend was in tears. The only positive note is that the
gaffer of the firm was horrified too, and declined to charge her.

We would now like to know then the best pruning 'window' falls, so that we
are forewarned before attempting remedial work and finishing the job so that
the tree has a balanced shape.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

We (the Local Parish Council) have a row of 107, (or is it 109) Holm Oaks
all with TPO's on them on the other side of a Public Footpath on County
Council Land. We wanted them pruning hard back because they were encroaching
onto our (Parish Council) land, AND made a public footpath dark. The County
Council contracted a team of professionals in and they took them right back
in about the April/May of last year. So I guess that is the time to do it.

Tree work on Scotts Pine, Sycamore and quite a few others was stopped this
year at about the same time, because of Birds nesting, so that has to be
taken into consideration as well. (Was on to the Parish Clerk this afternoon
about continuing the pruning. Guess the birds have finished now :-))

Thanks Mike. That's very helpful. We'll keep the nesting bird situation
in mind, but to be honest, no self-respecting bird would dream of nesting in
this tree for a few years - there's no crown to speak of!
Thanks again.
