Default Strawberries from seed

Hi,

I planted a load of strawberries from seed this year in a couple of
trough's, however they've become very congested, but im pleased to say they
are fruiting!

What would be the best way to split these up, and when would be the best
time to do it so i can get a bumper crop next year? Will the ones I remove
be ok put straight in the garden, or do they need some kind of protection?

Thanks!
Dan
