Some weeks ago it was claimed in this group that Marshalls of Wisbech had either ceased trading or had been taken over by another company. I was pleased to receive by post yesterday Marshalls Kitchen Gardener's Catalogue 2005, complete with a free packet of Cabbage Redcap F1. The catalogue contains many new varieties of vegetable seeds and plants, also flowers, shrubs trees, starter plants, etc. etc. S.E.Marshall & Co. Ltd. Agreed - Marshalls are still going! They do (or at least used to) belong to Unwins. One guy who's been involved with them for many years, Richard Massey (their Commercial Manager as recently as the beginning of this year), is now connected with a new company called "The Fruit and Vegetable Company" - I got a catalogue from them a short while back but sadly have lost it :( Neil. |

Can you shed any light on this Alan? ================================================= Rod Weed my email address to reply. http://website.lineone.net/~rodcraddock/index.html |

Can you shed any light on this Alan? None at all about the structural side of the business I'm afraid. I can tell you that the 88 page 2005 Marshalls Catalogue is a continuing improvement on their previous excellent work for kitchen gardeners in particular and for all gardeners generally. Free copy from: Marshalls Customer Services: 01 945 583 235 -- Alan & Joan Gould - North Lincs. I found out yeaterday that the mail order part of Woolmans, the chrysanthemum nursery, has been sold to Kings Lynn-based Eastfields. I beleieve Woolmans was also part of the Unwins 'empire'. Now, Eastfields also operate "The Fruit and Vegetable Company", which is where Marshalls' ex general manager has reappeared. Lots of buying and selling going on in that part of the world at the moment, it seems! Incidentally, a Companies House internet search on "S E Marshall & Co Ltd" returns a note that the company is incorporated in Northern Ireland! Neil. |

That sort of thing is fairly common in most spheres of business these days. Now it seems that even gardening is prone to wheeler-dealing. Marshalls Catalogue and leaflets mention nothing about 'The Fruit and Vegetable Company'. One leaflet offers two well known books for sale by Dr.Hessayon and Joy Larkcom and a couple of Video/DVDs by Joe Maiden. Maybe there will be further rationalisation to follow? -- Alan & Joan Gould - North Lincs. |

I wanted the potato planter that Marshalls used to sell. It's no longer available they say. Is it not strange that it is in the Fruit & Vegetable company catalogue?
Incidently, don't use the F&V company 0870 number to order, it is always a long wait while they rack up their cut, just call 01406 381 362. They will answer 'Eastfields' and you just ask to order from the F&V Company. |
