Seeking Winter Planting Advice

Hi there -

Would anyone have any advice on what to plant in pots in the winter that will winter well and produce some flowers? Ideally to keep outdoors in a sheltered spot.

Would appreciate some tips!

The obvious garden centre choice is pansies (or violas, which are less
slug susceptible), and fancy cyclamen which won't survive the whole
winter, but will give show till the weather gets too cold.

In a shallow pot winter flowering heathers look good, along with hardy
cyclamen - smaller flowers, but they survive.

Whatever you plant, also put in some bulbs - crocus, small daffodils
(the 6-8inch high ones rather than the monsters), scillas etc - they
will push through the rest and give you flowers in the spring - go for
the earliest flowering bulbs that you can, otherwise you'll be itching
to plant your spring and summer bedding in the pots before the bulbs
have flowered.

Whatever you plant, also include some interesting foliage, eg variegated
ivy or a miniature conifer, since the winter display will never be as
floriferous as a summer one.
