I once killed a large (20 feet tall) Elderberry tree by pouring lots of neat
Sodium Chlorate weedkiller around its roots washed in with a gallon or two
of water. It took a couple of tubs applied over a few weeks, but it died
after a few months. I would suggest using this method only in Summer though
when the bush is in full leaf and drawing water from the soil. Ordinarily I
would have dug the tree out but this self set tree had grown between two
walls where it was totally inaccessible to get at to chop down, dig up etc.
I wouldn't try Sodium Chlorate if you have any other plants anywhere near it
though, or if you intend to plant anything in the same place within the next
year or two.
Alternatively you could chop the tree down to stump height and use some
stump killer - though I don't know how effective it would be against
elderberry due to their habit of putting up lots of suckers.

Cut it back then dig out quite easily, but leave plenty of stem to leaver on
as you dig, makes it much easier.

I have been advised that elderberry doesn't throw suckers from its roots
therefore if you cut it down then sever the roots as far as you can from
the trunk it should die. This is what I have just done and will find if
its true in due course.

Yes, that will kill off most elders. You may have a small number of
coppicing shoots (not suckers) grow up from the remains of the roots.
They are easily pinched out and the rest will die off in a short while.

I killed one by cutting it right down and whenever new growth appeared, gave it a dose of
glyphosate. Each time the growth was weaker. Last year it didn't come back.
This took about 4 or 5 years.

Hi Judy,
Yes I have 2 in pots - both Sambucus Niger "Black beauty" - they are
in big pots (1/2 barrel size) and are doing very well thank you - just as
well as another which is the same age and in the garden proper. I live in
Aberdeen, so they have survived floods, frost, snow, rain - a normal day's
weather here in fact!

Hi Chris

Thanks very much :) I'm experimenting with a number of trees in big
pots. Particularly interested in seeing which of the native British
ones will respond well. The hazel (in huge pot) seems happy enough &
I'm also wondering whether a rowan would be able to thrive. If anyone
else has tried anything like this, I'd love to hear results ...

The problem around here is to *stop* them growing!

I know someone who has a beech tree in a terracotta pot which she wishes to
find a home for before she leaves for New Zealand next week...if you are
interested Judy? She lives in Crouch End.
