goes to show opinions differ.

I remember that frequent coats of 'whiting' were
required, but the effect was very good, and - I
suppose - antiseptic?

As it's a long wall in question with a right angle
at one end, whatever I end up using, it will
be only on the short length as a trial of longevity.

try a search on Google looking for "Making lime wash" then a second
search for "Lime Putty"
Should give you all the info you need.

Walls were Lime washed as a way of killing off fleas and other pests that
would otherwise Lurk in the walls.
