Shady climber
 

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a fast climber that doesn't mind
the shade? If it has a nice flower then so much the better :-)

I apologise if this question, or a variant, has been asked here many times
before :-) I'm very much a gardening newbie.

Not terribly fast but Hydrangea petiolaris is the first that springs to mind
- that needs to 'stick' itself to a wall and has to be kept well watered.
Are you thinking of a trellis, though?

mind
- that needs to 'stick' itself to a wall and has to be kept well watered.
Are you thinking of a trellis, though?

It would help if you said roughly where you are and what is causing the
shade (shade under trees is quite different to shade from a wall, or maybe
you have both?!)

I live in East Lancashire (Rossendale) and I don't know if this is
significant but the climate here can be "fairly cool" (flipping freezing in
winter!!!) :-) The shade is caused by nest door's conservatory.

Hmm. -10, -15 or colder?

The critical questions about shade are whether there is light and
whether the rain gets there. If the answer is "yes" to both, then
you have little trouble. Many plants are quite happy with no direct
sun and quite a lot of shade, but (effectively) none can take the
near-darkness that heavy shade causes in the UK.

You could consider some of the strong rambling roses such as Alberic
Barbier, Honeysuckle but stick to Lonicera periclymenum varieties, as its
cold one of my favourite shade plants is maybe not a good idea, that is
Parthenocissus henryana no noticeable flowers but good leaf colour, it has a
reputation for being a bit tender so you would need to ask locally (not at a
garden centre - who sell the same plants all over the country, and probably
wont be employing anyone that would know the answer) maybe someone on here
gardens in the same conditions will give you a better idea.

Hi Gavin,
I've grown 2 clematis (Nelly Moser & Montana) on a north-facing
fence/trellis for a couple of years now and their growth is pretty frantic
with loads of blooms. The fence is in shade for much of the time and gets
the sun occasionally. They seem to be pretty hardy plants and very quick
growers.
