tomatoes in in pots growbags
I read an article in the Daily Mail written by Chris Beardshaw where he
described planting tomaotes in growbags with 2 pots inserted into each of the holes - one to raise the level of the compost and the other to act as a reservoir. What size are the pots and do you have to cut the bases out of both them entirely? Thanks. I can't find the article anywhere although I cut it out! |

he's a mad **** searching desperately for something novel to pad out his
column and secure a cheque. Might as well grow the toms in pots. "SH" wrote in message ... It certainly isn't new, my dad was doing this twenty-odd years ago....you are just adding extra growing space really and of course providing a resevoir for water....can't say I noticed any difference in toms grown this way and those planted straight into the bag, or even those planted in buckets for that matter...what really makes a diference is toms planted directly into 'virgin' soil (in a new greenhouse for example) - IME these seem to go berserk! -- If God had intended us to drink beer, He would have given us stomachs. |

I find I can get every bit as good results via growing in buckets as I can growing in the ground...the larger the bucket the better..when using a bucket I use one that holds 5 gallons of water....big enough so that I do not have to water every day...just for demo purposes I grew one in a bucket and allowed it to grow to 14 feet tall with hands all the way up....I must admit tho in the bucket they require constant attention re watering/fertilizing....as to what to grow it in....one can get just as good results using nowt but sawdust instead of soil providing the feeding is up to snuff....HW -- If God had intended us to drink beer, He would have given us stomachs. |

I grow my toms in the green house, but I dig the soil over in the greenhouse border then pour most of a growbag of compost on top. Even if the soil is not at it's best anymore at least the toms have a chance to reach moisture in the soil to tide them over if I forget to water them like clockwork. A bit of plastic with holes cut in it laid over the top reduces water evaporation from the soil. Andy. Andy. |

The message
from "Phil L" contains these words: It certainly isn't new, my dad was doing this twenty-odd years ago....you are just adding extra growing space really and of course providing a resevoir for water....can't say I noticed any difference in toms grown this way and those planted straight into the bag, or even those planted in buckets for that matter...what really makes a diference is toms planted directly into 'virgin' soil (in a new greenhouse for example) - IME these seem to go berserk! Indeed: on the holding I kept all sorts of poultry, goats and rabbits. In the autumn I dug well-rotted rabbit and goat manure into the three beds in the greenhouse. In the spring, as you say, three different varieties of tomato raced for the stratosphere, but had to stop at around seven feet. The flavour was outstanding and the crop could only come under the heading of 'bumper'. I usually grew Shirley, Alicante and Ailsa Craig, and rarely had any over at the end of the day's sales. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |
