Can I put gravel on top of compost in a plant pot

I have planted some begonia tubers in compost in a flower pot. If I put
some small chippings (about 3/16 ths of an inch in diameter) of gravel
on top of the compost will the begonia be able to push its way through
the gravel when the time comes to push their way upwards .

Thanks

Alan

No problem. And the gravel will help prevent the surface from drying out.
