Another plant pot and gravel question

Does putting small diameter gravel (1/8th. to 3/16ths. on top of
compost in a plant pot deter snails and slugs from attacking my plants.
As far as slug pellets are concerned I have tried them and they always
seem to get buried under the compost when I water the pots.

Thanks

Alan

PS. believe me I am no greenfingers.

More of a Mechanic? I understand a spray of WD40 round the outside of the
rim is a good deterrent. Not tried it yet, but read it somewhere.

I've just put copper tape around all my pots - looks quite attractive as
well, apparantly the slugs get an electric shock and just crawl back down
again!

No. ISTR that if you surround them with a ring of bare copper wire
(don't use the laquered stuff!), that keeps them off.

Unfortunately, you may find that the slugs are already in the soil itself.

As far as slug pellets are concerned I have tried them and they always
seem to get buried under the compost when I water the pots.

Cut food tubs (margarine, etc) or use the trays ready meals come on, and
water them from beneath.

I got some from a garden centre where it was £4.99 for, I think, 4 m, but
then found some at B&Q for £1 cheaper. Just look in the "anti-slug" section.

Actually, it was the B&Q one that was £4.99, with the garden centre one more
expensive. And it does look attractive if you can get it stuck on straight!
