Small hedge

Would like to plant a low hedge; preferably one that has perfumed flowers,
around some garden beds. Any ideas what would be nice? Thanks,
Margret

Given the problems these days with box blight I would go for something like
the common myrtle but in the form tarantina (has smaller leaves and denser
growth) this is often used in bridal bouquets and has aromatic leaves as
well as scented flowers. It is easy to grow so long as you are not in a cold
exposed place

Hi Margret,

It would help to know how low you wish the hedge to be .. evergreen or
deciduous .. formal or informal. Bear in mind that if you intend to
regularly clip the hedge for a formal or at least tidier appearance, you may
be cutting away the flowering shoots. It may be possible, of course, to
clip after flowering, depending on the plant and the effect required.

It would also help to know about your soil and aspect, including sheltered
or exposed position.

Just another thought - if it's to be a low hedge, would patio roses do it?
Not pretty to look at in winter, though.

How about a lavender hedge, but it would need to be a sunny dry site, and be a good companion for whats in the beds, i.e. roses.

Hi Margret,

The Santolinas will make a low hedge; grey or green foliage with yellow
flowers.

Have you thought about a crop hedge, such as step-over apples, black
currants or blueberries (acid soil)? They may only be fragrant just before
you eat them :-), but would be a good use of space.
