strawberries?

Am looking to buy some strawberry plants. Any recommendations as to which
type? Am looking for outstanding flavour and sweetness.

Also, where are good places to buy them?

Best,

- h

So, no-one knows anything about strawbs then?!

I order them out of a catalog or at a local nursery center.

Ah ha! There is someone here who grows strawbs :-)

Get on the Internet and type in Growing Strawberries, and see what kind of
local response you come up with.

Done that .. and read the catalogs. Unfortunately, the marketing hype tends
to make all strawbs 'sweet', 'delicious' etc as opposed to some being
'plain', 'not that sweet', etc. So I hoped for some info from people who had
experience of growing them.

Or maybe they are all stunning fruit ;-)

I'll just have to pick some and hope...

Best,

- h

I order them out of a catalog or at a local nursery center. I ask abo how
big or sweet they get. I am in the US so I doubt that my recommendations
would do you any good.
Get on the Internet and type in Growing Strawberries, and see what kind of
local response you come up with. Good luck. Dwayne

Well I guess that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' but if it helps, we
have tried quite a few varieties.

'Emily' was a smasher and even cropped well after living for 7 months in a
carrier bag ( we moved house and it took ages to get the garden organised).
'Cambridge favourite was good for us last year and cropped well and had
'pretty' berries. I know that sounds like an odd comment but we also grew
'Symphony' which looked painfully stretched if that's possible for a
strawberry. It also had a lot of white top on which, to me, is very
'supermarket'. 'Aromel' is good in a sunny year but last year's continual
rain until mid August gave us a very poor crop.

We get ours from Mr Fothergills and have always been very pleased, but my
Mum uses Ken Muir and thinks they're fab too.

Hope this helps.

The way in which strawberries are raised, grown and cropped has every
bit as much influence over the final flavour and texture of the crop as
does the variety. Weather, soil and time of the year too have their part
to play. If you really want to have outstanding flavour with tart
sweetness, you need to pick tiny wild strawberries. Next best thing to
those are alpine varieties such as e.g. Red Delight etc. begun from seed
then kept on as perennials.

Just get one each of some different varieties, and see how each one
suits you, you should not need to order any more of your chosen ones
next year as they will all produce runners and you will/should have more
than you require next year.
