Default cos lettuce

I am growing cos lettuce for the first time and they are healthy 8 inch high
plants, but the leaves are tuning outward not the high incurving leaves I
expected. Do I have to band or tie them to "train" them or will they mature
normally ?

Training lettuces is unheard of as far as i am aware. My little gems
(small cos type) head up by themselves. The only worry is if they are
bolting which is something lettuces seem to love doing.
