Does anyone happen to know if the multitude of Buddleia cultivars are as
Butterfly friendly as the basic species?

More or less, yes. There may be the odd sterile one, but most of
them have fertile flowers with pollen and nectar.

I find Lavatera is another good butterfly attractor as is Wallflower

Though other urglers have reported that the dark flowered ones don't
attract so many butterflies.

It's like cabbage - it may be good for you but it's not necessarily
tempting
