fence erecting and trees

Anyone know how close i can put a concrete post (for a fence)to a
4inch diameter beech tree before it becomes detrimental to the
tree.Any other advice on this matter would be appreciated

THANKS

I think unless you put the post right on top of the tree or dig through
several major roots, it's more likely to be the other way round.
Established beeches are not easy trees to kill (assuming yours is healthy).

The tree is more likely to heave the fence over as it grows, if it is too
close to it. It you are planning to let the tree grow into a mature
specimen, the further away you can put the fence, the safer for the fence.

Very rough guess: 1/4" / year, but that's probably on the high side.

Gales Sawmills at Mortonhampstead (now closed) had a 4' wide iron gate
on display that they'd cut out of a beech tree. It was completely
grown in the bark resealing itself around it - nobody knew it was
there until the teeth starting flying off the bandsaw and guys
starting leaping for cover.
