Doesn't seem possible to buy leaf mould so I'm wondering what the best

Peat, provided that you are not averse to using it.

How about coconut fibre? Seems to work well as a soil conditioner,
though dries out a little quicker than peat.

Birds take coconut fibre for their nests. I can't imagine how
uncomfortable it is.
