Default rooting tomato plant side shoots

Is it worth rooting side shoots in water and then on to pots to create
new tomato plants, or does this produce inferior results to the to the

Worth doing it early in the season and the plants should be just as good
as the original - just behind in their development.

In my experience you don't even need to root them in water - just straight
into normal compost as long as it is kept moist.

Later in the season you risk having a load of tomato plants which are just
flowering as the temperature/length of day starts to bring the growing
season to an end.

Cheers
