LETTER OF THE WEEK
My gardener of over 50 years who has gardened from 'back yard to half an
acre says 'Well said'
It's been my beef with Gardeners World for a long while.
They seem to have no concept of what a small garden is and that small
gardens are now the norm especially in the South. A small garden is a lot
less than the sq footage of the house sometimes not much bigger than the
living room.
GW persist in talking like the man sitting next to a friend at a lunch who
said "I just have a small arboretum" (a total contradiction unless he had
bonsai), which is what is turning people off. It bares no resemblance to
the
reality of most.
Monty talks of planting 5 or 7 of everything because it looks so much
better, true if your garden is a field, but for most of us one is all we
have space for unless you want monoculture.
+1
Last week's edition was particularly bad. Monty cuts the top off a rogue
pink
hollyhock. Monty pushes his wheel barrow, Monty pats his dog. The visit to
the
allotment and Carol Klein were good, but the other 20 minutes of the
programme
weren't worth watching

It would be interesting to know what the average size garden is now.
http://www.myalbum.co.uk/Album=MUKLG34Q
is 120 feet long and 25 feet wide. Divided up into 'gardens', much to the
amusement of one urgler when I refer to 'the gardens'.
120 x 25 includes space for a 20 x 10 garage at the far end, a 10 x 8 shed
and an 8 x 6 greenhouse.
Plenty for the gardener to do and satisfy her.
