I find Google Earth (plain or pro) runs without a browser running.

just tested it by loading Google Earth and ending all the browser
processes. Google Earth is still up! Google Maps seems to need a
browser running.


but Google Maps is much faster.


and doesn't insist on being supplied with irrelevant personal information before
you can use it.
