"Only" is one of the words which is rarely used correctly. It should
come immediately before the word that it is qualifying.


"The only lonely" would be quite wrong. Roy Orbison got it right with
"only the lonely".


I think you probably understood what I meant, although you do have a
point! It comes (shall we say) before the word or phrase that it is
qualifying. If it comes just before, say, a verb, then it is the verb
that it is qualifying.
