Default Soil on grass

I am wanting to cover up a long strip of lawn and make a flower bed.
The soil/compost will only be about 6-8 inches deep on top of the grass.
I have read that you can cover up the grass with cardboard - then the topsoil -
and the grass will not reappear in the flower bed.

My money would be on any couch grass to easily penetrate wet cardboard.

Any one done this - or any other ideas: I don't really want to be lifting the
grass-sods if necessary?

Grass is exquisitely sensitive to glyphosate. Mask off the edges and
spray it carefully - leave for a couple of weeks and it will be dead.

Beware of overspray on shoes or you will leave outline foot prints.
