winter wheat and winter rye (both grain
crops) are excellent for breaking up hard
ground. get them planted as soon as you
start getting into the colder wetter season.
turn them under in the spring several weeks
before planting.

you can usually get the seeds from a
grain elevator type place for a few $ for
10lbs.
