Many years ago my father bought a cheap rotovator. Really hard work, you
had to hang on to the handles to stop it running away while it slowly
dug into the ground.

Then he bought a Howard 350 (this was the mid 1970s). Bigger, quieter
engine and driven wheels. You just had to make sure it stayed straight
as it crawled along digging 6 inches deep into clay, leaving a fine
tilth. It even self propelled itself back to the shed. Wonderful machine.
